The Claims

"Unveil younger-looking skin with our innovative Glycolic Fix. 60 radiance-boosting pads, soaked in exfoliating glycolic acid (2.8%) retexture and resurface skin whilst witch hazel helps to tone. This moisturising formula with hyaluronic acid and soothing blue daisy helps to reveal brighter and smoother looking skin."

The Ingredients

Aqua, Glycerin, Glycolic Acid, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Hydroxide, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Alcohol, Alcohol Denat. (SD Alcohol 40-B), Disodium EDTA, Globularia Alypum (Blue Daisy) Extract, Panthenol, Lactic Acid, Parfum, Limonene, Ethylhexylglycerin, Dehydroacetic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Linalool, Geraniol, Citral

The Immediate Concerns

You've probably already spotted what, for me, is the biggest concern here, the amount of red ingredients in this product, including a few which are downright nasty such as;
Phenoxyethanol which can cause shut down of the central nervous system, vomiting and contact dermatitis. Phenoxyethanol is a glycol ether. Glycols are a series of chemicals that find their way into all sorts of things: paint, lacquer, jet fuel. Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin and can cause reproductive damage.
Benzyl Alcohol which can instigate immune system response, gradually causing your skin to react, causing itching, burning, scaling, hives, and blistering of skin.
and;
Sodium Hydroxide causes irritation to eyes, skin and mucous membrane. The CDC (using american reports due to being unable to find a British one, if you know of one please let me know) reports that, "Skin contact with sodium hydroxide can cause severe burns with deep ulcerations. Pain and irritation are evident within 3 minutes, but contact with dilute solutions may not cause symptoms for several hours. Contact with the eye may produce pain and irritation, and in severe cases, clouding of the eye and blindness." Solutions as weak as .12% have shown to destruct healthy skin cells within one hour. Other studies acknowledge Sodium Hydroxide as a strong irritant that is corrosive to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract, but that the severity of the effects are related directly to concentration and pH levels, as well as the length of exposure and skin type.*
Considering Sodium Hydroxide is fifth on the ingredients list and so present in a higher concentration than Phenoxyethanol and Benzyl Alcohol it raises a big concern to me over what this could do to the more fragile skin of the face.

How Did It Fair?

Funnily enough I liked the Glycolic Fix cleansing pads, I liked the smell of it and I liked how it was quick and simple to use after cleansing my face properly with cleanse and polish.

My Conclusion

I was fully considering buying more after I used the Nip & Fab Dragons Blood Fix pads I recently bought in a sale. But now I've looked into the ingredients fully I'm not sure if I will or not. I just hope the dragons blood pads aren't as full of red ingredients, even though I prefer the scent of the glycolic fix pads. You can expect to see a post about the dragons blood pads before long.

What do you guys think about what ingredients there are in our skincare products, are you bothered by it at all or not?

  1. I recently picked this up in a sale and have the same issue as you. So many dodgy ingredients. I don't think I'll be repurchasing personally.

    1. It's a shame because they smelt lovely, but I cant justify continuing a product with those ingredients in just for its smell alone :(

  2. I've tried these before and quite liked them, I never looked at the ingredients and it's shocking to see how harmful some of these could be.

    1. I should make it a habit to check ingredients before purchase but like everyone else, it's not the first thing I think of

  4. I had never looked at the ingredients in this product, to be fair i don't do it a whole lot but I really need to start. But how can they be allowed to put such harmful substances in products for retail. Unless it is such a small amount to not yield these awful effects! I am just questioning xx
